Milestone 22 March 2025

GGLASC inaugurated at the Trust's Bishnupur campus

In response to PM Modi's call to compile a database of Girmitiya descendants, the Trust inaugurated the Global Girmitiya Lineage Archive & Searching Centre (GGLASC) — dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Indian indentured diaspora.

The Global Girmitiya Lineage Archive & Searching Centre (GGLASC), established at the Mahavir Singh Memorial Trust in Bishanpur village, is now operational. The centre is dedicated to preserving, researching and sharing the history of the Girmitiya diaspora — the millions of Indians who were taken to colonial plantations as indentured labourers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Centre helps families across the world trace their ancestral roots and restore lost identities and dignity.

Surinamese scholar Chan Choenni visits the memorial wall

Scholar Chan Choenni, a Girmitiya descendant born in Suriname and based in the Netherlands, visited the memorial plaque at the Trust honouring his ancestor — as part of the ongoing Girmitiyalogy Lectures and Pilgrimage to Bharat.

Accompanied by his wife Binarai Makhan, Chan Choenni paid tribute to Thakur Kishundayal Singh Harnandan Singh — a Girmitiya from Chhapra (now Saran district) who was indentured to colonial plantations more than a century ago.

The plaque was inaugurated on 22 March 2025 by Shardhanand Harinandan Singh. The Trust's memorial wall honours India's freedom fighters alongside the largely overlooked indentured labourers who built the diaspora.

प्रधानमंत्री मोदी के गिरमिटिया वंशजों का डेटाबेस तैयार करने के आह्वान पर, न्यास ने ग्लोबल गिरमिटिया लिनिज आर्काइव एवं सर्चिंग सेंटर (GGLASC) का उद्घाटन किया — जो भारतीय गिरमिटिया प्रवासियों के इतिहास के संरक्षण और साझा करने के लिए समर्पित है।
